Australian Cotton II

artist statement

It was a long time before I saw the beauty in this peculiar plant that was changing the face of our landscape in the Goondiwindi of the early nineties. My friends in the industry would travel to the States and come back with artwork depicting the U.S. cotton industry - an industry that was as old as white settlement in Australia. I hadn't seen anything that really enthused me about the subject until one day I saw a boll backlit by the afternoon sun. I had my muse. In the ten year time period between 1997 and 2006 I explored the subject more fully, but only through the etching medium: I have made very few cotton paintings.

Notes about the cotton monoprints

cotton monoprint IVPrinting 100% Australian cotton had been challenging: handmade paper behaves differently to machine made. The success of the image depended heavily on the ability of the printer to repeat a hand wiping on several different plates in the same etching. Consequently there were many prints that were too different from the rest of the edition to be considered part of it. These printing "mistakes", however had something too interesting in them to discard completely. I selected the small parts I liked from each print and collaged them onto their own page - highlighting their individual beauty. Unlike work that is meant to be in series, these relish the wiping and colour variations that occur in the preparation and editioning of such a complicated print. They are technically monoprints , though numbered and limited to twenty, each has slightly different colour or wiping variations from others in the "edition".

looking at the piles of rejected prints of the 100% Australian Cotton etching ( rejected because of miswiping , or inaccuracy to the edition . For more information about editioning and other elements to do with printmaking go to what is printmaking) i realised that there were parts that i liked in many of the prints even though they weren't part of the edition . So i selected the parts i liked cutting and then collaging them . Unlike the work that is in series , these relish the wiping and colour variations that occur in the preparation and editioning of . I have editioned them , and created sets of similar numbers that meant they would go together then collaged them. They are like monoprints, they have taken the parts that i like the most from the sereis . These have also been successfully and effectively framed within the same frame.
