image: shed 2010 watercolour on paper 61.5 x 24.5 cm private collection
description
A series of approximately 50 paintings of and about one of the grazing properties on the Mole River, west of Tenterfield in northern New South Wales, by Australian artist, Christine Porter. Subject matter includes the shearing shed (pictured) and the ancillary sheds such as the blacksmith shop and tobacco barns as well as some close-up views. Watercolour on paper, except for three small acrylic paintings, the sizes range from 10cm square to a large work 79 cm long. about the artist
artist statement
If it was up to me, I'd still be 'down the Mole' making artwork about this property. It was my main painting project for 2010 and some of the work that came from it is, perhaps, the best yet. It's certainly the largest body of work I've ever made of one place, and there were probably the same number of paintings again that weren't made, such was the inspiration for me here. I drove up this valley once, about twenty years ago, and was amazed by the astonishingly beautiful landscape, I've wanted to make artwork about that area ever since. The remnant buildings of the village needed to run this property in the early days, remembers a time when distances were traversed and land was farmed by a different type of horsepower. I am in debt to the hospitality of the family from here, and take this opportunity to thank them for having me as their 'artist-in-residence' at that time. Christine Porter, Lismore, December 2010
