A small series of rural paintings by Australian artist, Christine Porter,  using a strong horizontal crop to explore a landscape view of the world. Watercolour on paper, all work 27.5 x 8.5 cm (11 x 3 3/8 inches).

Note In the paintings where the new version of the image is similar to the initial interpretation of the subject, the painting is still dated then. When the new crop has changed the picture markedly, it is dated in 2011, to describe its position in the artist's history of seeing and creating.

artist statement

New work in 2011, these paintings are re-configured from their original, more traditional formats, to emphasize the horizontal in a landscape view - even when the subject is not obviously that of earth and sky. In the open spaces of western Qld, the horizon is often a straight line linking those two elements; at the coast it is interrupted by the mountainous, in Christine's paintings its existence is re-enforced in the shape of the work suggesting a life along, over and beyond some unseen but inevitable horizon.
