description
Watercolour paintings (and one acrylic painting) of the buildings on a sheep and cattle property near Morven in south-west Queensland, Australia, by Australian artist Christine Porter. Subject matter includes the shearing shed, both interior (pictured above) and exterior views, other sheds and the sort of smaller images that continue the story of a particular place. Sizes range from 10cm square to larger work approx 80 cm long. about the artist
artist statement
This project followed the same sort of trajectory that has developed in the twenty-one years of Christine being a "serial artist-in-residence" across rural Queensland and New South Wales. There had been a chance meeting at an art show in Charleville with a woman whose family had a place nearby. A conversation: "there's a shed up the back you might be interested in", she'd said. Some emails and phone conversation later and then a visit planned to tie in with Christine's next trip west. Several days spent walking about and observing, watching the shadows move across a desiccated landscape and seeing how those shadows related to the buildings there. This was a time of looking and seeing: sketching, colour notes, thinking, paintings started, some photos then back to the studio. Months later a body of work, mainly watercolours in this case, but sometimes acrylics or etchings, that remembers that visit, that describes the buildings and the activities of that place but one that places the artist there too.
