Christine Porter: painter

  • Christine's first exhibition was in 1983 with her sister. A year later she made her first shearing shed painting after she moved to north Queensland from coastal NSW. recent shearing shed paintings
  • In 1990 she gave up her teaching career to become a full-time artist. Her 2001 retrospective exhibition entitled ten years: one thousand paintings was held in Goondiwindi and Lismore. buy exhibition catalogue from Full Moon Publications. 2011 sees her contemplating, with something akin to astonishment, twenty-one years as a full-time, self-supporting, professional artist. details
  • She was influenced by the late Fred Bates who encouraged her to see herself within the context of an Australia-wide watercolour community. In 1996 she was elected into the Australian Watercolour Institute and in 2007 as an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales.
  • Her 2006 Bachelor of Visual Arts degree from Southern Cross University has added a theoretical dimension to her artmaking reflected in new work evolving alongside her paintings of rural Australia. ideas-based artwork
  • She has been awarded more than one hundred and twenty prizes in art shows around Australia including, in 1999, the Kenneth MacQueen Award for Watercolour. In 2006 she received the McGregor Fellowship for overseas travel from the University of Southern Queensland. more prizes and awards
  • Christine has paintings in the collections of the International Watercolour Museum in Mexico City (representing Australia), Brisbane City Council, and in various public, corporate and private collections worldwide.   details 
  • Christine exhibits regularly within Australia and internationally: solo exhibitions most years .She has twice represented Australia in overseas watercolour exhibitions. In 2010 she was part of the group exhibition  Wattle, Rose and Thistle: The Finest Watercolourists of Australia, England and Scotland held in Sydney and Wollongong. recent exhibitions
