artist statement

This property is steeped in the history of this area. Colonel Bruxner himself lived here: he that the highway is named for. The buildings tell the story of the district: the house is verandahed chamferboard; the tobacco barns - concrete blocks. The shed is iron; the sheep yards- timber; cattle yards- steel. History, leaving its footprint on the landscape as land use changes with each generation.
I stayed in the quarters and from the verandah sensed the night-empty highway that would be visible in daylight to the east, curiously silent even then, for such a major road. In the dark I watched a single pair of headlights snake its way along that river road like an deep-sea creature. I listened to the labouring of its motor as it climbed and twisted its way westwards - the only sound on the edge of a profound silence as old and complex as this land.

This has always been a favourite part of the country for me, and my thanks to the family for sharing this place and for their hospitality during this project. There are more artwork to be had from this landscape - I can feel it. Christine Porter, Lismore December 2010
