Christine Porter: teacher

  • Since 1990, Christine has included teaching as a part of her art practice. Having been a primary school teacher, she uses many of those skills to teach about the technical aspects of printmaking and painting as well as about professionalism within the industy. She has continued to improve her teaching and speaking skills by undertaking training with Toastmasters International.
  • She has taught adults in Australia and across the Tasman. By maintaining her teacher registration in both Qld and NSW she is able to work in schools in both those states.
  • Christine maintains that it is her continued experience as a full time exhibiting artist that positively informs her teaching, giving her a strong working knowledge of medium and process. Her ongoing successes as an art-businessperson contribute to her understanding of the art marketplace. In 1998 she was a national finalist in the Executive Woman of the Year award.
  • With her practice having been forged in the dusty isolation of western Queensland, she believes that the most truthful artwork can only be developed via the integrity of the artist's own steps. The learning experiences she has developed are aimed at encouraging the independent artist, especially for those artists living in rural or remote areas.

printmaking skills classes
Whilever Christine was known as a painter, people would ask her to teach them how to paint. In 1996 when she added intaglio printmaking to her collection of art-marks, prospective students clamoured for that too. Classes include colour printmaking for beginning and experienced printmakers as well as other topics.

This is a series of modules for emerging and practicing artists that can be adapted for other industry professionals as well. The seminars, lectures and  consultations deal with issues to do with professionalism in the current Australian arts industry, concentrating on how individual artists can work within this volatile industry successfully, without jeopardising their creative integrity.
