Basket and Broom

artist statement
These etchings were created as part of the body of work exhibited in 2004 at the Brisbane Royal Show. Later that year the exhibition toured to Mudgee where it was shown at the cellar-door gallery at Andrew Harris Vineyards: a building formerly a two stand crutching shed. The etching suite complemented the thirty or so paintings, but concentrated on just one recurring visual element that Christine has been exploring for many years – the woolbasket. These are large wicker baskets originally used in the shed for collecting the just shorn fleece. They are sturdy, irresolute and mellowed by the lanolin of thousands of fleece. With the incidental light of a skylight or doorway, they are a visual feast for this artist who is enthralled by their detail and subtle colour that is so richly tonal albeit monochrome.

The artist statement for the exhibition the shearing shed stated: Recent watercolours and etchings of and about the shearing shed at “Umbercollie” Goondiwindi: a project which, in its intimate exploration of this specific site, acts to celebrate the history and inherent beauty of each and every working shed across the country.
